Mini Tummy Tuck
Mini tummy tuck (partial abdominoplasty) is a widely sought after procedure for many patients. This procedure is a good option for a patient with a small, lower abdominal pooch who has very little extra skin and minimal to no muscle separation. Good candidates are women who are close to their ideal body weight with minimal to moderate changes of their abdominal wall after pregnancy. Men who have lost significant amounts of weight also tend to be good candidates.
With a mini tummy tuck, a smaller incision is made than in a standard tummy tuck. The skin and fat of the abdominal wall are separated from the abdominal wall muscles in a more limited fashion, thus allowing for less skin excision than is possible with a full abdominoplasty. The skin is stretched in a downward direction and trimmed precisely. Sometimes, if the belly button sits high on the abdominal wall, the belly button stalk is divided from the abdominal wall muscle, allowing it to slide lower. If the patient has a particularly prominent lower abdominal pooch, the lower portion of the abdominal wall muscle may be tightened.
Role of Liposuction
Because the skin is separated from the abdominal wall muscle in a more limited manner than in a standard tummy tuck, liposuction can be performed extensively in combination with a mini tummy tuck. This allows for dramatic contouring of the upper abdomen and flanks with liposuction, and elimination of the lower abdominal pooch with direct excision.
Because the procedure is less extensive than a full tummy tuck, the recovery tends to be quicker. Patients are asked to refrain from strenuous activity and exercise for 3 weeks after surgery and need to wear a compressive binder for the same amount of time. Most patients miss a week or less of work.
Because mini tummy tuck is a less extensive procedure, the results tend to be less dramatic than those seen with a standard tummy tuck. Not all patients are good candidates for this procedure. In the right candidates, however, the results can be excellent. Given the less invasive nature of this procedure and the shorter recovery time, mini tummy tuck may be just what the doctor ordered!
